Ubuntu was recently brought to my attention as a possible
new desktop virtualization tool that we can utilize at our company. After using
the tool and secondary research about Ubuntu, I recommend not using Ubuntu for
our company.
Our company currently uses Microsoft Windows and its
applications and much of Ubuntu’s tools are extremely similar to Windows. Ubuntu
does not offer anything unique outside of the actual interface that would set
them apart and be worth the investment and time to train employees. It
took several attempts to even get the software and I can see several of
our employees not wanting to waste time in training or installing the tool
especially since they are accustomed and comfortable with Windows applications.
Another downside I see is the potential for computers to run
slower due to the PC’s having to run 2 operating systems. This can cause
bandwidth and space issues and potential network failures especially if we are
looking to run Ubuntu remotely at home.
While Ubuntu is a simplified alternative to Windows, the feasibility
to implement this new tool would be more costly in time and training and that
are not worth it to the business at this time.
